Cedric Maridet, sound installation
Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong  // 12.02.10 to 31.05.10

Developed during Artist in Residency program of Asia Art Archive, Archival Records intends to articulate the Archive’s physical and material space through the medium of sound, and establish a new connection between the Archive’s ‘voices’. It focuses on the realm bridging textual readings (of printed material) and their vocal counterparts, through multilingual audio recordings of excerpts from the collection, supplemented by ambient sounds at the Archive. This sound installation not only aims at exploring the idea of the Archive, but also rediscovering the mechanics of sensory experiences and aural cognition through a composed technological mediation of experience.
Archival Records focuses on the reading of selected texts found in the Archive, which deal with sound or its particular vocabulary, either directly or indirectly. The collection of recordings will be continued during the exhibition with texts from:

Reading in progress / A sound-event

"During his three-month-long residency, Cédric Maridet will re-explore the Archive’s physical and material spaces through the medium and the derivatives of sound.
During a first research phase, documents from the archive reflecting the various aspects of sound are surveyed. These texts will be then turned into sound texts exploring the different voices of the archive. Upon the completion of the residency, a selection of these sound texts, along with recordings from the physical environment of the archive will be on display at the Archive, re-directing visitors’ usual route and acts, thereby, inviting at a real exploration of the archive through sound. A presentation-cum-performance by Maridet at the Archive is scheduled for 29th January 2010.

Documentation

As a reenactment of the lecture-performance, I have read the text again on the 19th July 2011 in Paris, and edit this new reading with the original recorded readings that where played during the event. The contrast between the live reading (the main narration) and the recorded ones (the texts) is of course now only rendered in the different sound quality in the recordings. New sounds of the direct environment in Paris are also incorporated here.
